Urban HIV Prevention Through Brokers Picking up Momentum in Hawassa PDF Print E-mail

The Hawassa urban HIV Prevention Project of Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia conducted Annual Refresher training for 40 brokers of domestic workers on HIV prevention issues and available services for domestic workers and selected five broker houses for branding and furnishing in September, 2014.

As locations where domestic workers spend a substantial amount of time before they get employed, the urban HIV Prevention project is working on broker houses as centers of information for the former. Accordingly, the training aimed at raising the awareness of brokers on HIV Prevention and available service provision so that they provide domestic workers with relevant information besides using it themselves.

The refresher training focused on the following topics:

  • Basic facts about HIV/AIDS
  • Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH ) Sexually Transmitted Infections(STIs) and Safer Sex
  • Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) (value and its benefit)
  • Stigma and Discrimination

The selection of 5 Broker Houses was also conducted within the same month for Branding and furnishing with IEC/BCC materials to address domestic workers on HIV, GBV, Ois, etc. Selection was conducted as per the criteria to Provide IGA management, basic business skills training, saving and credit training through PLHIV association (30 Female PLHIV Group members).
