“It wasn’t something we had planned but we are very happy that we did it!” said Abeje Israel, program manager of the Wise Up program at Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia, after an impromptu condom demonstration and distribution of promotional material to 60 daily laborers was carried out. The daily laborers are currently working on paving the side road where Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia head office is located with cobble stone.

As daily laborers are one of the population groups that the Wise Up program attempts to reach the opportunity was sized. The daily laborers were very happy to get an informative condom demonstration that they promised to consistently and correctly use condoms in their sexual encounters.

Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia in partnership with DKT-Ethiopia is implementing the Wise Up project.  Wise Up is a Nationwide HIV prevention program implemented in partnership with DKT Ethiopia, targeting Sex Workers, Clients of Sex Workers and other MARPs. It advocates for correct and consistent condom use among Sex Workers and their clients (i.e.100% condom use), and socio-economic empowerment of Sex Workers through alternative IGA cooperatives.

Capacity building training for Wise Up staff held at Debrezeit Management Institute PDF Print E-mail

One of the necessary components needed for the success and constant improvement of any program is capacity building.  Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia is a firm believer of this, and that is why a capacity building training was held for 66 staff of the Wise Up program from April 2-5 2012. The participants came from all the 18 cities and towns where the Wise Up program is operational.

Using various techniques of facilitation such as lectures, role plays, brainstorming and role plays the participants took trainings on the following issues: planning, reporting and documentation, monitoring and evaluation, basics of counseling, cooperative management, logistics enhancement, budgeting and financial reporting, principles of success story compilation as well as software troubleshooting.

The training was organized in house by the Research and Capacity Building Center of Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia and carried out by the various experts and program heads of Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia. The participants’ response indicates that the training was very educational and it is expected to bring about improvements in the various works of the participants.

Wise Up biannual University Debates Colorfully Conducted PDF Print E-mail

Wise Up’s biannual University debates have been successfully organized in selected higher institutions where the program is operating with the title “Peer Pressure and HIV vulnerability among university students”. Panelists have been assigned and presented their findings on the title of the debates and forwarded them to the target audiences. Sessions were highly participatory and interactive in a way that the vast majority of the students and the university community had a say in the issue raised. In addition there were other functions such as music, quiz competition, poem competitions, condom demonstration and short plays as part of the panel discussions.

200 women from Wise Up took part in the 2012 Choice Women First 5 Km Race PDF Print E-mail

200 women consisting of sex workers, members of cooperatives, beneficiaries as well as staff members of the Wise Up team in particular and Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia in general took part in the 9th Women First 5 km race. DKT-Ethiopia, a partner in the Wise Up program with Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia, has been sponsoring the women race since its inception.  This year’s event that took place on the 11th of March was named “Choice” after one of the female contraceptive pills DKT makes available for the public in its wide variety of family planning options.

Participants that represented the Wise Up/ Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia had their faces painted with the Wise Up name or the red ribbon at the Wise Up booth located at close proximity of the start and finish line. One of the implementing partners of the Wise Up program Music May Day Ethiopia made the event colorful with an all Female Band which played various tunes including Kererto a traditional warrior song.

The race said to be the biggest women race in Africa attracted nine thousand participants who run, jogged and walked the five Km race.

A double cabin TATA 4 wheel drive car made available for the Wise Up program PDF Print E-mail

In order to facilitate the mobility of the staff of Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia during the implementation of the Wise Up program, DKT Ethiopia has made available a double cabin TATA 4-wheel drive car. At the handover ceremony held at the DKT Ethiopia head office on March 6 2012, the Logistics Department head of DKT Ethiopia Ato Mesele Abebe handed over the keys to Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia. The car is expected to be used for the various activities to be carried out within Addis Ababa and also various cities outside of the capital.

Safer Life 2011 wound up successfully PDF Print E-mail

An award and recognition ceremony held at the Harmony hotel on Friday the 17th of February brought a colorful end to the colorful and fruitful month long campaign of Safer Life 2011. The attendants of the ceremony were representatives of donor organizations that believed in the campaign and financed it, heads of partner organizations who implemented the various edutainment activities and outstanding individuals who made extra efforts to make the campaign a success.

The ceremony was opened by remarks from Ato Niguisse G/Tsadik a Senior Executive at DKT Ethiopia and Ato Henock Alemayehu Director of Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia. Donors, partners and outstanding individuals were recognized and awarded with certificates while a slide show highlighting the activities carried out was put on display. Melekt band entertained the guests by playing popular Amharic and English songs with a jazz fusion while DJ Stephan played melodies that made many guests stand and dance to the tunes.

Safer Life is a month long campaign implemented by Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia as part of DKT’s Wise UP program in commemoration of the World AIDS Day. Safer Life was held for the fourth time in 2011 and has reached close to a million people with its message of Safe Sex, i.e. proper and consistent use of condom to various groups of the population in the 17 major cities of Ethiopia including the capital Addis Ababa.

Berchi Cooperative in Dire Dawa received materials worth 50,000 birr from HAPCO PDF Print E-mail

Wise Up Program of DKT Ethiopia being implemented by Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia works towards socio-economic empowerment of sex workers through alterative IGA Cooperatives. There are 20 sex workers’ cooperatives in operation throughout Ethiopia as one of the projects of the Wise Up program. These cooperatives are engaged in various business activities such as food preparation, beauty salon, café, and dry food preparation.

One of the sex workers’ cooperatives under this program is Berchi cooperative located in Dire Dawa City Administration. Berchi cooperative was established in 2001 consisting of 23 sex worker members who have undergone through basic cooperative training through Timret Lehiwot Ethiopia with a capital of 20,000 birr. Currently there are 20 members and their cash in capital has grown to 29,568 birr.

In December 2011 Berchi Cooperative received coffee brewing machine, refrigerator, frying machine, tables and chairs worth 50,000 birr from HAPCO so that they can thrive in their business.
